Future Access Networking Saemundur E. Thorsteinsson (Dipl.-Ing.) graduated in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland in 1982. He worked at the University's Science Institute from 1982-1983 in the field of GPS. In the years 1983-1987 he studied communications engineering at the Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany and worked on measurement systems at the company Dr. Reutlinger & Söhne in Darmstadt. In 1987 he joined the Systems Engineering Laboratory at the University of Iceland where he worked in the fields of Vessel Tracking, Radar Data Processing and Navigation systems. In 1997 he joined Iceland Telecom and heads the companys research department. He was a member of the Icelandic delegation to the ACTS Management Committee in 1994-1998. He has lectured at the University of Iceland on microcomputers, measurements, electromagnetics, control and navigation systems. He has also lectured at the Institute for continuing education. Mr. Thorsteinsson has participated in research projects in various frameworks, including the EU RACE, ACTS and IST programmes, Eurescom, the European Institute for research and strategic studies in communications and local Icelandic programmes. He has also participated in and/or headed internal studies on the introduction of ATM, ADSL and NGN concepts into Iceland Telecom's technical and service portfolio. His research interests include Next Generation and Future Access Networks concepts as well as research into the user centredness of telecommunications.
